In awe of the genius of Altaf Bhai
This has been the first time i have closely observed the electoral process and i cant help marvelling at how smart MQM as a political party is.
As a colleague remarked once, MQM has been able to do what Zionists have been able to do in Israel. Just like through decades of lobbying and campaigning, the Zionists have been able to equate anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism, MQM has been able to label anyone who is anti- MQM as being anti-urdu speaking. To be compared with the conspiratorious Zionists is actually a complement here and during 2013 elections, some of the moves of MQM has really left an impression on me. Another extension of this strategy has been the keeping of media and "anchor persons" constantly under pressure by complaining of their bias against MQM.
For starters, the way they rigged the Karachi elections on May 11 is quite amazing. To have pulled off the act of ensuring that literally hundreds of polling officers wouldnt show up on the polling day in suspected PTI strongholds is nothing short of miraculous. To have the extensive network of thugs to intimidate hundreds successfully on the same day is something that they would be really proud of.
On the other hand, by boycotting the repolling in 43 stations it achieved two things. One, it ensured that if PTI would win which it was expected to, they couldnt claim a fair and square defeat of MQM. Two, on the day of repolling with mqm having boycotted, if any voter in the mqm dominated areas, such as delhi colony, went to vote he would attract attention as having voted for pti. And as preparatory work on the eve of the repolling, "na maloom afraad" did some open air firing just to plant fear where it belongs.
Similarly, by promising to take Imran Khan to court over his allegations that Altaf Hussain murdered the PTI Sindh chapter leader, they will make the matter sub judice which will prevent media from having any analysis and debates over the incident which would have inevitably splashed mud over MQM.
Likewise, its well known, that Altaf Hussain has a full fledged heirarchy of "kaarkun" who actually do the mafia work of mqm such as collecting "thug tax" and executing assasinations. On the other hand, he has a parallel heirarchy of political leaders who are the face of the party. This org structure has enabled Altaf Hussain to get his mafia assimilated in the political process of pakistan while maintaining firm control over his party as each of the 2 heiratchies maintain a check and balance over the other.
If PTI wants to compete in the dirty politics of Pakistan, it will have to adopt extreme guile and cunning going forward. As we have already learned, outside Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the populace inspired by Imran Khans idealism is only as large as the facebook population in Pakistan. Since the great transformation of Pakistan didnt happen, PTI will have to adopt political expediency if it is to come out as a winer in the konger run. Otherwise the sharks will shred it to pieces.
