I may be 29 but im an "Emerging" Adult
I often feel hat I'm not as old as my age suggests :p. But then everyone probably feels that way; staying in denial about them ageing and wanting to stay young and cool and not become "uncle, aunts". Well, I have finally come across he latest development in development psychology which actually lend credence to the way I feel.
Adults in the west are now crossing the 5 stages of adulthood a lot slower than before. Baby boomers used to get across education, moving out, finding a job, getting married and having kids stages earlier in life than generation Y are doing today. A few decades back, 2/3 of 30 year olds would have crossed all these stages; today only half of 30 year olds do. Various socio economic and cultural factors contribute to this " changing timetable of adulthood" and they are making the cases for the recognition in psychology of an additional stage in life : emerging adulthood.
Throughout the 19th century, there had been only been infancy, childhood and then adulthood would follow. However, at the start the 20th century, a new phase was recognised
called adolescence (the teens) mainly because some distinct characteristics of his cohort were identified. And it should be noted that recognition of an additional stage in development is not just a very big deal in psychology but has implications for healthcare, education, social welfare, marketing etc. Now, psychology is on the verge of admitting into its dictionary "emerging adulthood" which basically refers to the 20s.
To be noted is that this cohort has been identified in the west and is believed to be skipped in the emerging economies in general. However, SEC A in emerging economies too tend to behave in the same way as he west in general which is why i would believe that this stage would apply to me too :p. These emerging adults typically are self focused and ambivalent. The "possibilities of life" still accompany them and they are fairly optimistic about their professional and personal future. And they tend to NOT have completed all the stages of adulthood. Which explains me !
